There are over 250 student organizations, including 55 recognized fraternities and sororities The Binghamton Bearcats participate in the NCAA Division I America East Conference, and student fans form the BU Zoo cheering section in basketball games. The mascot of school is a bearcat named Baxter.
Binghamton University is ranked as one of the top schools in the state of New York. The top ranked graduate programs include the Department of Public Administration, Department of History, and the Department of Psychology. In addition to it the university is famous for its sustainability efforts. The notable alumni include the screenwriter who penned Blazing Saddles, and Tony Kornheiser, the ESPN commentator and Madeleine Smithberg, the co creator and executive producer of The Daily Show, Andrew Bergman.
